History

Divya Jyoti SVD Seminary is a major formation house of theological pursuits that trains SVD fraters towards contextual theological method enabling its inmates not only to gain a comprehensive overview of Christian revelation but also to experience the lives of the people of Odisha in all its diversities thereby develop a creative mission approach. The house is situated on an SVD-owned plot of land at Debeipali, Sason, adjacent to Khristo Jyoti Mohavidyaloyo (KJM), the Inter-Diocesan Regional Theologate of Odisha. It was blessed on 21st September 2008 by Most Rev. Lucas Kerketta SVD, the then Bishop of Sambalpur and inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Joseph Topno SVD, the then Provincial Superior of India-East Province (INE). Keeping in mind the contextual theological formation of missionaries, the Society of the Divine Word established Divya Jyoti SVD Seminary, in collaboration with KJM, in order to have more SVD scholastics studying and to provide impetus to the missionary formation. KJM (established and run by SVDs ever since 1987) began to accept SVD fraters as students of Theology since 1997. With the inauguration of Divya Jyoti the SVD Fraters who had resided with the diocesan students at KJM now moved to the new residence on October 1st, 2008. The beginning was humble with three deacons, four scholastics and Fr. Lancy Rodrigues SVD as the first rector. Until the academic year 2022-2023, Divya Jyoti has produced 50 full pledged missionaries of the Word along with 3 Deacons, one finally professed Brother and 12 others still in formation, raising the strength to 65 theologians formed in its abode.
